I counted 31 listings on the first page. There are 484 pages  x 31 items per page = 15,004 listings.

Lynne clarified that the # at the bottom of the marketplace pages refers to pages, not listings. I think someone called it listings before and some of us picked up that word.

If I may ask, why aren't people listing items? I'm not writing this to be combative, just genuinely curious. I have a limited number of items and only digital download right now as I'm recovering from major surgery and can't get out in the snow. Once the snow melts, I will be more mobile and be able to get to the post office to mail things people may buy from me. I have 50 listings I am currently working by taking pics and writing descriptions, so that once I can get outside again, my shop will be raring to go. (Does outside even exist anymore? I've only seen it by looking out a window for 5 months now!) :)

I keep reading about everyone waiting for site improvements before they list items, but I don't understand the logic. Unlisted items will never sell. This site like all others is a tool for sellers. A much cheaper alternative to hosting your own website. AY is responsible for promoting the site, not our shops or our items. If every seller promoted their own items, the buyer isn't going to care where they buy from. If they want your item bad enough they will follow whatever link you post. Waiting on site improvements before you list means no revenue coming in.

I really hope you don't close ArtYah, Craig! I just received business cards, shop banner and items that have ArtYah's website plastered all over them. Would be a shame to never use them. I for one much prefer this site over Etsy. I just got so fed up with changing titles and tags every other week because people would post in the forums how SEO had recently changed and if you don't update, you'll be left behind, blah, blah, blah. With that and the constant guessing game as to how to generate any interest in my shop over there, it was not an enjoyable selling experience. Each one of my items here has more views than my entire Etsy shop ever did.

I say rejoice in the fact that ArtYah is a smaller site. At least here we all have a chance of our items being seen for longer than an hour, before being pushed back to page 157. For those still reading this text wall, congrats! You made it to the end, and may you have a wonderful, creative evening!

No one is waiting on site improvements, because, as Craig said above, no more improvements are going to be made to this site.

I am curious. How long have you been with AY?

Yes, the listings are dropping, but I think 16,000 is a lot of listings for where AY is currently.

Well...

When people were jumping on from etsy during the "PayPal" crisis we got up to over 60,000 active listings. We had a lot of momentum and everyone wanted us to grow as fast as etsy in 1 month that took etsy 12 years.

So, we hired 4  programmers and then spent a ton of money to find out that our site could not do all of the things that everyone is used to over at etsy. By the time we decided the best plan was to build a new platform everyone was jumping ship.

This is the second time this has happened to us, and we got burned again.

My father always had a saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Those words ring true to this day. But I am still thinking that AY will have the last laugh when we get our new build up and running. People will see the ease of use and buyers will have a cart and sellers will be able to offer all of the shipping options and other features that this current site cannot provide.

It is just a matter of holding out hope. The time will coome for ArtYah again.

It's the bottom of the ninth, two out, full count and the bases are loaded!

Thank you all, for all of your support!

To set the record straight, we are not going to close the site.

That said, we are looking to slim down our server size as the amount of items and images are far less than where we were last year.

The interesting thing though is that we have more people registering for ArtYah than we have had in a long time. Again, we have people signing up just to buy items, which is also very nice.

I read some discussions that go like this over in the etsy forum, (this is not intended as a slam and should not be construed as such)  "ArtYah has no buyers, it is only the sellers buying from each other." That is just not true. But that is how it goes and that is what I have read from sellers posting to etsy that had tried AY and have left.

I am saying this because there are a lot of people "waiting" for something to happen, even though it is already happening. People are buying and it is not sellers from sellers.

Again, I feel that the internet is not the way it was even 5 years ago. Are people are buying online, yes. Does social media have the same impact that it once had? NO!
Social media is what it is, Social Media, and I do not think that people go on FB to buy an item. A person can run ads until they run out of money and not sell a thing. But FB just made a good amount of money from you because people liked your item, but did not buy  it.

This just leads me to one of many conclusions. ArtYah is still the new kid on the block. We have only been around for 2 years and not everyone has heard of us. If someone has heard of us, they maay give us a try or not. Common names like ebay, etsy and Amazon get the traffic. We have a ways to go before we are at their levels. One thing that I can say that is nice is that ArtYah is compared to a lot of other sites that have been around a lot longer. over 10 years longer in fact.

Thank you for all of your support!!

I am hoping the new build will do well.

I just closed my two IDs on Ebay. I had one regular ID and one store.

The new things they are doing over there is not my cup of tea.

With over 5500 sales  and 4400 + FB since 2001, I feel that I did well.

But I just don't intend to give Ebay my bank account # and give 30 day returns and pay the shipping cost back to me on returns to get a measly 10% discount on FVF and a defect for having a return.

They have also increased fees again on stores and just regular listings.

So you can see why I am hoping things pick up for us here at AY.
I don't have many things listed  here just waiting.
Patience is so hard. But good things do take time and money.

I don't pay social media to advertise because I am with you Craig. I don't think they are working any more.

My point got lost in the text wall I wrote. That's the problem with them. My mind tends to wander, I guess.

People are writing that they are waiting for the site rebuild to happen before listing items. One is not going to get sales if you don't list. I don't understand this. AY is a platform tool for us to use. It's up to each individual seller to make the most of it. Sure it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Etsy has (yet) but you can't expect a site 2 years old to be as polished as one that is 10+ years old. BTW, before I started really searching for a way to sell my items, I had never heard of Etsy, just Ebay and Amazon. Etsy managed to grow to the size it is now with no advertising.

I've been with AY since last summer. I was one of those shops that jumped the Etsy ship.

Hello Craig,

Thanks for all of the information!

Some random thoughts:

Social media does not work for me.  Pinterest seems to generate the views but not the sales.

I am going to start doing a limited amount of promotion when I list an item and move on.

I do not like etsy, I have about 16 items listed over there.

I think calculated shipping will do a lot help this site.

Although I have gotten mighty discouraged over here, I am going to stay here.  I have been working on quite a few items that I can list.

I have one item that has 500 views but no sales, I don't understand that.

I am too stubborn to quit!

Looking forward to the new platform!

Best wishes,

Richard

I will remain here knowing I have something to look forward to...the new site build coming in the Summer. Until then I am keeping my shop open and continue to relist  20-25 items but not adding.

My trust in Craig has never wavered that he will eventually be able to reach his goal and give Etsy or whoever a run for their money!

I still have the patience and fingers crossed that eventually we will ALL benefit from hanging in there.

We do not all think the same, neither is everyone's business decisions the same, but we all hope AY will succeed. There is more to that than listing products on a site that will become defunct sometime in summer. If some sellers decide that investing the effort, time and money to continue to do that makes no good business sense to them, then that does not mean that they do not like AY or are mad at the site. Neither does it mean that they do not have good business sense. It means that they are making a smart business decision according to their own lives, most likely because all of their eggs are not in AY's basket. That does not mean that they do not support AY.

Thank you for answering my question about how long you've been at AY, Sherry. Good luck to you here or anywhere else you may be now or in the future.

It isn't like I am not willing to give a platform a chance.  ArtYah is my 4th platform not counting Etsy or the other large sites.

I have been on another site (not Etsy) and we heard the re-build is coming and is going to be great just keeping listing and hanging in there.
I kept listing..............I have been there 5 years and the site is not what they told us it would be.

So I think you can understand that it is hard (for me) to hear almost the same things being said again here on ArtYah.
I am not slamming Craig or ArtYah I get that it is hard to keep the $$$ flowing to get things done.

I have been here almost 2 years (June) and yes there have been some improvements and as I said I am going to hang on for now.

Which is my point. We all make smart business decisions for various reasons. One of them is our individual histories. I have compassion for the newer members, because I have been one and know the thought processes. But, I also have compassion for the older members, because I am one. So, how can we all think the same way about the situation? We should all support each other, though it may not be in the same way. We're not bad-mouthing AY. There is nothing wrong about being honest and truthful, and still having hope.

Thanks for the comments Sandi and Lynne. I realized when reading your posts that I have only been trying to sell online for less than 2 years now so I guess I still have that "new seller smell". Thanks for your comments on everyone's business decisions being suited to them. You are absolutely right and that clarifies in my mind people's decisions.

Not knowing how long people have been in the biz and what they've gone through to get here, I was just curious as to why people see "New site coming soon!" and think "Not going to list then." I for one am going to continue to list on the site that is up and running now and adapt to the new site build when it comes.

All the best,
Sherry
