Hello all,

I know that Craig is still developing the site but I am still confused by the search. I understand that if I put "baby girl hat" into the search bar, I will see pages of hats (adults and babies), pages of girls clothing, and perhaps lots of other baby items such as quilts. What I don't understand is why I also see pages and pages of teas, coffees, soaps, jewelry, etc.

I am trying to be patient waiting for sales, but if this is how items present to shoppers, they won't keep searching for very long.

I think search pulls up every single listing that contains one of those words anywhere on the page. They need to refine it to first look for phrases.

It also brings up all items in a shop that may have one of your search terms in the shop name.

I have 2 Franciscan Desert Rose listings in my shop...a search for Franciscan Desert Rose brings up 7 pages, with ONE of my two listings, then shows a couple of valid items, then shows 22 items from a shop called Desert Macrama, then all the items in a shop called Herisson Rose, then all the listings in a shop called Lizi Rose, then Roses Workshop and the list goes on.  Finally DEAD LAST, on page SEVEN is my second listing for Franciscan Desert Rose!  It is reasonable that my second listing only has 1/3 of the views as the one shown first.  All of the other shops were jewelry, macramé, clothing.

Hopefully the Search feature will be fine tuned before the Christmas season begins. Craig knows that most online sellers are financially dependent on that Season.

I agree with you PlainandPurl. I've done my own searches and got frustrated by what was popping up. Still holding strong with the patience for it to all work out soon.

Yes, I am disappointed by search also.  Just a few weeks ago I was pretty happy with what I was seeing when I searched for my items but now it's a real mess.  I believe that's due to the increase in listings available.  Recency seems to play a much too important part in the results, allowing so many unrelated items to show first before the listings with the actual words and phrases in the titles and tags.  I really, really don't understand why everything has to be searchable.  I think it makes sense to have only the titles, subtitles and tags as searchable.  That way, as long as we sellers do our jobs and choose our keywords and phrases wisely, the search will make a lot more sense to buyers.  I have been endlessly frustrated by a similar search problem on Aftcra for years now.  The more words you include in your search, the more items come up instead of the results being narrowed down.

I normally wouldn't recommend to copy another site, but I have to say out of all the sites I shop on, eBay is by far my favorite for narrowing search results to exactly what you want.

I've reached the point where I want to yell at those in charge (on any site, not just ArtYah) that SUBTRACTION is more important than ADDITION! (:  Please stop bombarding us with even more STUFF in our search results, we're all intelligent beings who know exactly what we want.  And when we don't know exactly what we want, we browse.

If this doesn't get resolved in the next couple of months, I think we'll need to present a united front to ArtYah and convey our concerns with the search function. We sellers know what we're talking about, but I think we all often feel no one is really listening to us when we stress how important search function is to any site.  I think a bad search is likely the number one reason for a high bounce rate.  I know I flee a site as soon as I get frustrated when looking for an item and it only gets harder instead of easier as I try to narrow down the results.  I don't want to sound melodramatic, but if this one problem doesn't get fixed before the holidays, ArtYah may miss out on its big chance to make something of itself.

MicheleMade...no doubt about it, Search needs to be fine tuned. It is frustrating for us all. We have to remember that Craig has been/is a Seller himself. He knows the problems and the importance. I truly believe this is on his list of 'must haves' for his site.

To suggest presenting a 'united front' would be like a kick in the teeth to him when he is doing his best to address every concern/problem that goes with setting up and improving a site that is still basically in its' almost infancy stages. And he does 'listen to us'...that has been proven many times over.

So please MicheleMade...hang in there. It will get better. The frustrations we all feel now, will not be with us forever. We all need to keep enforcing a united front with a big dash of patience thrown in. The very best to us all here.

I think if "most relevant" is included in the choices that would help a lot

When the improvements to our search come, I hope shop names will NOT be included unless specifically requested.  If I am searching for a blue silk blouse, I don't want to see pages of jewelry from a shop called Blue Willow (hopefully a made up name!)

Conversely, if I am looking for a shop called Blue Willow, please don't show me pages of blue bracelets, blue blouses and blue vases.

@Michele, I have never found a search that works for me. Ebay and etsy both have problems. On artyah I click on a category instead of using the search bar. I still don't know why we have tags here? I would rather not have them if they don't do anything, which they don't seem to be doing anything. I agree search is a mess and I think it should be #1 on the to do list. It doesn't matter how many bells and whistles a site has if the search feature does not work.

Search should be the NUMBER ONE thing to be fixed, ASAP, not rearranging the layout of pages. Then we need to be able to name our own sections and rearrange our listings. If those 3 things were fixed, I would be elated!
