I sold a yard of fabric on Etsy. When I ran the copy of the sale off I noticed that they had charged over 8% tax on the price+the shipping.
I do not have a license and do not charge tax.
Is this something they are going to start doing? Making you charge taxes wheather you want to or not?
There is no wan a person[unless they are a big company] can charge taxes to every state and then be able to pay it at the end of the year.
Anyone else have this happen or know anything about it.
Craig, how about you. Is this something they are going to force us to do?
If so I will just have to quit selling online.

Figured it out. Etsy charges taxes on this order because it goes to Washington state and that is where they are located, I guess.

Yes, I recently had this happen to a few of my Etsy orders, but not eBay orders going to Washington state.  As of January 1st, all online marketplaces are required to collect sales tax when Washington residents purchase anything online from any part of the country.  Etsy is doing it for us and showing us what they are collecting, but I believe eBay is collecting the tax but not showing the sellers that amount in receipts.  I'm fine with it but I do feel sorry for Washington residents.  What worries me a bit is that other states may soon follow suit.

This sounds similar to what companies have to do for digital sales to the EU, collect and distribute the various amounts of VAT for the different 28 - soon to be 27 [frown] countries everytime a digital download file is sold.

It amazes me all the hoops we online sellers have to go through to run our business in regards staying on top of rules, regulations, State/local laws, postage rate changes, etc.. I have had so many people (including family) tell me what a easy job it must be to be able to run a business in my pajama's. I would like to give them a earful of reality!
